Respect comes first

With communities, not around them.

The program’s proposed ethics and safeguarding framework puts host communities, living heritage and participant choice at the center of every encounter.

Culture and sacred spaces

Activities are designed with host communities. Follow guidance on dress, behavior and photography. Ceremonies are attended only by invitation; sacred spaces are never entered or filmed without permission.

Fair compensation and local benefit

The program prioritizes Togolese hotels, guides, drivers, caterers, artisans and performers, with agreed payments. The artisan marketplace is designed for purchases directly from makers.

Consent and privacy

DNA and genealogy sharing is voluntary. The proposed program limits access to named staff, requires explicit consent for public use and will define a retention period. Participants may choose full, limited or no filming and opt out of photos or filming. This website does not collect applications or ancestry data.

Child safeguarding

Youth activities must be supervised through responsible local partners. No unsupervised contact with children, no exchange of personal contact details or cash, and no photography without parent or guardian and partner consent. Donations go through the legacy project.

Heritage and environment

Respect site capacity and local rules, especially at sensitive heritage locations. Plans include small groups where needed, refillable water, proper waste handling and efficient group transport.

Health, safety and accessibility

Medical support, an emergency plan, accredited guides and accessibility arrangements are planned but must be confirmed. Check official entry rules and obtain individual travel-health advice before booking. Discuss mobility and dietary needs with the team in advance.
